Choosing the Beach Read
Happy, happy weekend, readers!
I don’t know about you but I’m welcoming this weekend with open arms and, dare I say, a near perfect balance of plans and chill time? My husband and I plan to do our usual weekend chores and some reading (me) and video gaming (him) mixed in with some friend time and seeing a Sunday matineé of the new Alien movie (we are pumped!).
Most excitingly, we’re also getting ready to embark on our babymoon trip to Nantucket Island next week! A few days of salt air…and the rust on your door (if you know, you know), windswept beaches, cobblestone streets, and delicious seafood are just what the doctor ordered (not literally, but she was very supportive of us going). As we prep, I’m of course contemplating an age old question for us reader girlies:
Which books, and how many, should I bring?
Luckily for me, I tend to be a seasonal, mood reader which I define as someone who prefers to read books that match the current season or destination that I’m in if I’m traveling. This makes my decision here fairly clear: I’ll be bringing something by Nantucket based writer and queen of the beach read - Elin Hilderbrand.
If you haven’t delved into Hilderbrand’s backlist, I will forewarn you that it’s LONG. She’s been at this a long time and there are an overwhelming amount of beach reads to choose from. I’ve read her winter beach series, WINTER STREET, and apparently I read THE PERFECT COUPLE a few summers ago but don’t remember a thing about it.
To help me choose my book for this trip, I consulted the Elin Hilderbrand guide curated by Bookstagram’s What Maddie Read and I landed on THE HOTEL NANTUCKET! Being that we’re staying in a charming hotel, it feels like a perfect fit for this trip; I’m also intrigued by the sprinkling in of paranormal elements since I’ve got fall on the brain.
Now, let’s get into a little weekly re-cap: A rapid fire re-cap of what I’ve been into this week.
Reading: I’m currently reading HOW TO WALK AWAY by Katherine Center and I’m enjoying it so far! Hoping to finish it before the weekend ends. Next will obviously be my EH pick, followed by my first spooky read of the season: THE SATURDAY NIGHT GHOST CLUB by Craig Davidson.
Watching: We recently finished The Bear s3 and at first, I wasn’t sure how I felt. After letting it marinade for a few days, I appreciate how this season adds more complexity to Carmie’s character and sets the scene for s4! We also just watched the Laci Peterson documentary on Netflix and oof, what a heartbreaking story.
Listening: I’m currently hyper-fixating on two podcasts, The Bad Broadcast (great pop culture commentary and girl talk vibes) and Book Talk, Etc. (lovely bookish chat and great book recs).
Loving, lately: Lately, I’m loving coconut water! Random, I know but it’s so refreshing in this blistering late summer heat and feels like a sweet treat without any guilt. Highly recommend the Koko & Karma brand if you have it at your local grocery.
Until next weekend,
Lain
