Is it fall, y’all?
Happy weekend, readers!
I come to you today refreshed from my babymoon and ready for every millennial gal’s favorite time of year: FALL!
But first, I have to ponder the age old question of when exactly does fall begin?
I’m sure you’ve seen the discourse about this on the internet. Instagram influencers declare the start of fall as early as August 1st (sometimes in early to mid July?!), parents often peg the start of fall as the first day of their kids’ school year (logistically, this makes sense to me), and the seasonally conservative refuse to acknowledge fall until they see the first leaf color change (historically, this has been me).
I’ve settled on accepting that fall is both a season but also a state of mind. It’s of course when the air gets cooler (unless you live in the south like me *crying in 95 degrees*), the sun rises later, the leaves change color. It’s also when we prioritize gathering and cozying, presence and softness. And of course, it’s about the fun stuff: The pumpkins, the soups, the spooky vibes, the football (if you’re into that, lol), Halloween!, Thanksgiving!, etc.
So I ask myself today: Is it fall, y’all?
My answer is: Yes. As of this weekend, it’s fall y’all. In the literal sense, the temperatures have started dropping a little, we have a single red leaf on our crape myrtle tree in the front yard, and it’s Labor Day weekend. In the spiritual sense, I’m ready to gather, cozy, believe in magic, and be spooked!
Throughout the next few weeks, I’ll be sharing some book recommendations to help get you into the season. Stay tuned!
But before you go, a weekly re-cap:
Reading: I’m still wrapping up THE HOTEL NANTUCKET and I’m really liking it, more so than her older books I’ve read in the past. THE SATURDAY NIGHT GHOST CLUB is next on the TBR!
Watching: One of our little daily rituals on our vacation was ending the day with binging Shark Tank on cable. We don’t watch this show at home so it felt like a fun, silly indulgence. This week, we watched The Queen’s Gambit (my second watch and my husband’s first), inspired by my husband teaching me how to play chess in a random Nantucket park on our trip, and I highly recommend it as a fall show if you haven’t seen it yet! The vibes are moody, academic, and perfect for this time of year.
Listening: No surprises here that I kept up with my weekly listens of The Bad Broadcast and Bad on Paper. I also started DROWNING on audio and love how Newmann’s books immediately start with action.
Loving, lately: Lately, I’m loving working on this blog! It’s been such a fun outlet to both create this space and devote time to writing.
Until next weekend,
Lain
