My 2024 Fall TBR

Now that we’ve established it’s officially fall, it’s time to curate the coveted fall TBR.

One of my favorite ways to embrace a season is to read books and watch movies either set in that season, or that match the seasonal energy! Two years ago, I posted a fall reading guide to my Bookstagram and shared a bit about my perception of fall:

Fall is one of my favorite times of year- it feels like both the end and beginning of something. It’s crisp and fresh, cozy and a little bustling. It brings the start of the holiday season and an excuse to decorate excessively, indulge in nostalgic activities and comforts, and gather with friends and family. It brings warm colors, soft materials, sugary and savory baked goods, comforting drinks...the list goes on.

Books that evoke fall to me essentially fall into two categories (aptly described by the Halloween salutation we all know and love): Trick or treat! Trick books being those that are scary, spooky, thrilling, gothic, and dark, and treat books being those that warm your heart and bring a sense of comfort. And of course, any book with elements of magic and academia suit this time of year so well!

This year in particular, my fall TBR is leaning a bit more into the treat category, which may be due to entering my third trimester of pregnancy and yearning for ease and comfort in this time. Without further ado, let’s unpack my fall TBR:

  • The Saturday Night Ghost Club by Craig Davidson: I stumbled on this book last year in Barnes & Noble and was immediately drawn in by both the charming cover and title! I added it to my TBR and saved it specifically for this time of year. Being that I enjoy horror novels, cozy books, and vintage vibes a la Stranger Things, this was a no-brainer for me. And I was intrigued by this being my first exposure to cozy horror!

  • Practical Magic by Alice Hoffman: I mean…of course. This is chronologically the third book in the series, and the first of four in published order. I, like so many other millennials, have loved the 90s movie adaptation for as long as I can remember, and I opted to start the book series two falls ago. I chose to read them in chronological versus published order, starting with Magic Lessons in 2022, then The Rules of Magic in 2023, and now Practical Magic this fall. I can’t wait!

  • Cackle by Rachel Harrison: This book has been on my mind for months and I’ve reached a point where I HAVE to read it soon, and can’t fathom putting it off any longer. I’ve read great reviews for this one, and it’s another step into cozy horror.

  • Spells for Forgetting by Adrienne Young: I’ll be honest that I don’t even know the synopsis of this book but I read and LOVED The Unmaking of June Farrow last year and that’s enough of a reason for me to prioritize this one.

  • We Used to Live Here by Marcus Kliewer: This book had so much buzz this summer! Get Out meets Parasite? Say less.

  • Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia: I read this one a few years ago and absolutely loved it. It’s gothic, atmospheric, historical goodness and I can’t wait to revisit it.

  • Vampires of El Norte by Isabel Cañas: I read and loved The Hacienda last summer and have had this collecting dust on my TBR cart for too long. Fall feels like the perfect setting to finally read this! Also, very intrigued to read something featuring vampires.

  • My Best Friend’s Exorcism by Grady Hendrix: Similar to Vampires of El Norte, I’ve had this on my TBR cart for too long and it - is - time. I loved The Southern Book Club’s Guide to Slaying Vampires, so I’m excited to delve further into Hendrix’s backlist. And again, can’t resist the 80s nostalgic vibes.

  • The Dead Romantics by Ashley Polston: Are you on Bookstagram if you haven’t heard of this cozy, paranormal romance? I got this for a Kindle sale a few months ago and saved it for my fall TBR!

  • You, Again by Kate Goldbeck: Hands down, one of my favorite fall covers. That with the fall New York setting and an enemies to lovers romance had me immediately adding this to my TBR. I had it on my list for last year but didn’t get to it in time so I’m hoping to squeeze it in this year!

There’s a good chance I won’t read all of these this season but a girl can dream. I’ll be sharing some additional trick and treat book recommendations in the coming weeks, so be on the lookout if you’re looking for more fall reading inspiration!

Happy reading,

Lain
